Fed: Abbott wins ballot
TONY ABBOTT is the new federal Liberal leader after a party room vote.
Opposition Whip ALEX SOMLYAY says Mr ABBOTT has won the vote 42 to 41 from MALCOLM TURNBULL.
JOE HOCKEY was knocked out in the first round of voting.
JULIE BISHOP remains deputy leader.
Mr SOMLYAY says Mr TURNBULL gave a gracious speech and wished Mr ABBOTT all the best.
Mr ABBOTT's told reporters he's a bit overwhelmed .. and he'll front a news conference shortly.
The only Liberal MP not present for today's vote was FRAN BAILEY who's sick.
