REXFORD Not long after he signed his card, making the rout official, did Jim Jeffers discover that victory in addition to a neat $3,500 paycheck for two days of work meant an opportunity at a national championship.

Jeffers, who uncaged flocks of birdies on his opponents Tuesday at the Edison Club to win the New York PGA's Ping Sectional Championship, didn't realize until afterward that he had automatically qualified for the National Club Pro Championships, Oct. 6-9 in Osage Beach, Mo.
The 40 lowest scores from that event will qualify for next year's PGA Championship.
