NSW: Man may face charges over Pennant Hills fire
A man faces possible criminal charges after a New South Wales coroner yesterday terminatedan inquiry into a 2002 New Year's Day bushfire in Sydney's north.
Coroner MICHAEL PRICE ended the inquiry, leaving the Director of Public Prosecutionsto decide whether there's enough evidence to charge the man.
The coroner's also pointed to flagrant and serious breaches of standard Rural FireService operating procedures as having led to the January 1 bushfire in Pennant Hills.
The blaze destroyed more than 630 hectares of parkland and was one of 750 bushfiresinvestigated by New South Wales Police.
In the Downing Centre Local Court, Coroner PRICE yesterday said the inappropriate positioningof a fire tanker at the scene of the blaze frustrated attempts by volunteers to make ahasty retreat.
Coroner PRICE has recommended the RFS reinforce debriefing procedures and occupationalhealth and safety issues to its volunteers.
